When you see a group of old age pensioners having a really good time, say in a care home setting, you can be pretty sure that music could be somewhere in the background. Nothing stirs their hearts and memories more than a familiar tune and set of war time sing alongs. Most older folk will have had singing and music lessons at school. Country dancing and choir were always popular for teachers to deal with – as long a one of them could play the piano! Watching a few armistice 100 events this year and seeing the pride on the faces of the senior singers singers was so heart warming. Many of them had been practicing for a few weeks this year, having not done much in the way of singing for years – it was clear that several had been formally trained and these music lessons came back to them in full glorious colour!
