I rcently attended a concert presented by our local town band – a full brass band, very much along the lines of the northern colliery bands that have massive following around the world. Our band has a very northern musical director and conductor – lass with a very broad northern accent and an unmatched enthusiasm for her task. She has been able to raise the standard of our very amateur town band year on year through the competitions and functions. They have recently reached the heady heights of being in the top band of competitions. This is such a fantastic feat for a very minutely budgeted outfit. The music at the concert was incredibly high standard – much along the line of the concerts at the local upper school and county youth band concerts. Good honest film music, Pirates of the Carribbean et al! Amusingly the young ladies in the french horns all bore a great similarity, relatively speaking.
